♥ Eliza & Kids...

On the 29th of February Joe took Eliza & the other kids to the Dr's. So Eliza could get her shot. I posted about it at the bottom of this post here! Anyway Joe got back and told me that the nurse was not very brilliant. She was very nice, however didn't know what she was doing! First off she sees a note in the chart for a smaller needle LENGTH not actual size of the needle. It has to be (I'm not sure how the professionals would say this and maybe when Joe reads this he can comment on the "real" names for me) but the hole that the drugs comes out has to be pretty big since it's a pretty thick serum. She grabs out a needle that is really tiny and Joe's like Um, you can't use that needle. The drugs will never push through it. She was like oh! Finally she gets the right needle. But the fact is she didn't need to put a new needle of it to begin with. The note in the chart was for IF the needle is ever bent and unusable like in this next link. Where the kids decided it would be fun to open it. This shot is crazy look here and you can see how BIG it is! Well if you look closely at the shot you'll see that there are 2 parts to it. A powder part and then a liquid part. The two have to be mixed and completely dissolved together before injected. The nurse had NO clue how to do any of it. And that's fine. I've had nurses that weren't sure about it before BUT they read the directions to make sure they're doing it right! PREFECT! HOWEVER this nurse was not doing so. So Joe had to tell her how to do it. Well it's finally mixed and she proceeds to push the liquid to the end (to get the air out) and proceeds to push 1/4 of the liquid out!!! WHAT THE! Joe says, "You just pushed out about 500 bucks worth of drugs right there! Her eyes get big and she says, OH! She puts the shot in at a 45 degree angle Joe says, TOTALLY missing the muscle and this drug HAS to go in the muscle or does little to no good at ALL! And then she pulls it out but wasn't quite through pushing all the drugs out while doing so! So there goes another 500 bucks on the ground! Another WHAT THE!!! Joe's looking at her like, DO YOU HAVE A LICENSE???? :) I think! He never really said that to me but I'm sure it was (Let us know hon!) Anyway I looked at the paper work for the prescription and yes we are now paying 2056 dollars per shot (okay we're not but the insurance is). So seriously she just dumped 1000 bucks on the ground! Thank you very much!!! And now we're DEALING with Eliza's and big time MoOD SwInGs!!! This is what happens when a little 3 year old girl doesn't get her drugs... All in a 10 minute period, mind you!!!
It's a pretty good day!

I'm NOT happy!

It's okay!

BREAK DOWN!!!

WHO HO! It's Great!

I'm on the verge of another break down!

Terrific huh! Just imagine a 12 year old girl and her hormones are crazy wild but it's a 3 year old and she has no clue how to control them AT ALL!!! All thanks to the retard nurse (who was very nice but didn't have a CLUE) who didn't know how to give a stinkin' SHOT!!! I called our Doctor because I'm seriously very irritated about this and the incompetence and perhaps she needs a refresher course? He finally calls us back (we have an awesome Dr). I start telling him but really I don't know all the medical jargon and what not. So I turn the phone over to Joe and have him explain everything, especially since he was the one there! Our Dr. (also a family friend) said that it was very disturbing news and he was looking up in Liza's chart to see who the nurse was. Well it just so happens that she gets her shot on the 29th of each month and Feb's 29 happened to fall on a Friday when our Dr isn't in the office so it was another Dr's nurse. He said he'd take care of it and speak with her Dr etc. So hopefully we'll never get her again and the next time we'll be going only on Monday, Tues, Wed or Thursday! But until the 29th of March we'll be suffering from the Eliza behavior from above!

On a better note the kids all and all had a pretty good day. No major catastrophes. Thank heavens!

About 10 minutes of heaven and no fighting... Until Eliza started putting her feet on Lane! :)

Olivia!

I dont even know what to say except that I want to hold her and cuddle her.

I love the post about the fish kisses, I was trying to get morgan to do them just this morning.

Poor sweet girl...has to endure so much...and the nurse didn't help a thing. Yes, I'd definitely boycott Fridays! :)

Poor baby can you imagine being 3 and not knowing why you are so darn moody? That just wants to make me cry.

Ok, I'll ask this again, why isn't Joe giving her the shots. If it's an IM shot and he is going to school for nursing then why can't he handle it, especially since you have to go and pick up the meds first?

I give myself a shot once a week, soon to be twice, yes it's a sub q but I'm sure that this is right up Joe's alley. What gives?

Isn't it fun dealing with incompetent medical staff? There are so many medical "degrees" one can get now adays that i never know if I'm dealing with an actual nurse, or a nursing assistant or an EKG tech or a medical records transcriptionist. THey all wear scrubs and nametage, so you assume they know what they're doing. Sorry you--and little one--had to go through that. Glad you have a great doc to fix it all!

Oh my word, that would irritate me SO bad! I'm so sorry she got the retard nurse!
Hang in there!!

Will they not teach you how to give the shot. I have had to mix powders with liquids and give Kyler shots before? Wish I were there, I would do it for you. Poor thing.

♥ We could TOTALLY do it. Joe's almost done and will have is BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing) in June. However she doesn't want us to do it. And I don't want us to inflict pain on her it's bad enough that we're the ones disapling her. We've never had issues like this before. Joe has actually given her the shot 3 or 4 times but she doesn't like Daddy to do it. :) And I don't WANT to do it. Plus it take 2. Someone has to hold her in a death grip and the other to give the shot. She is very strong and freaks out when she gets it!

♥ Joe loves giving shots and all that stuff but he doesn't want her to not "like" him for hurting her either!

So I just take her in and she gets a sticker and a toy and she's HAPPY! (that is after the poke is all over) :)

At least the other kids are doing well today.

Well where to start the needle size in which you are trying to discribe is called the gauge, which refers to the diameter of the needle, they also come in different lengths and diameters. So just like a shot gun sizing is called the gauge so are needle sizing, so the smaller the number or gauge the bigger the diameter of the needle. Eliza uses about a 20 gauge needle for her shot and about 1 1/2 inches long so that the medicine gets deposited into the muscle and slowly releases its effect over the course of a month. So now that you understand a little about needle size let me explain what the nurse tried to use. She tried to use an insulin needle which is approximately about a 26 gauge needle compared to a 20 gauge needle an insulin needle looks like a hair compaired to a garden hose. and an insulin needle is only long enough to get into the subcutaneous fat not the muscle. I refrained from telling this woman that I am a nurse so I didn't intimidate her, so she would not get more nervous but I think I should have. I finally get the nurse to get a more correct size of needle but she grabs a shorter needle approximately 1/2 inch in length, which should be ok if you inject the needle at a 90 degree angle to the muscle you are injecting into. She injects at a 45 degree angle and retracts the needle while still depressing the medicine and like Melissa said all over. I never said do you even have a license but it sure did pass through my mind. Now understand I had all three of the little ones crammed into a tiny closet where they give shots at the clinic, there are all kinds of medical needles and supplies, I have an emotional wreck of a daughter who is brute strong and tring to gett away, and two other little kids tring to get into everything, and an incompatant nurse, needless to say I wasn't happy but was nearly powerless to stop the nurse from wasteing the shot.

Hope this clears some things up Honey,
Joe

Oh geez. I think I would have had a coronary. I had a L&D nurse try to give me my steriod shot in my arm, and even having never had one before I was like, "wait just a minute. I think that's supposed to be in my rump". Proof that health care professionals are not perfect!

AND, I'm am SO sorry about the mood swings. YIKES. Is there anyway the doctor can intervene and get the insurance to pay for the 1K worth of serum that went by the wayside?

♥ I knew you didn't say the license part out loud but I thought you said you were thinking that!

I get to take all 3 little ones every month by myself and try to keep them out of all the drawers like Joe was talking about! THey have all kinds of needles and drugs and a ton of crap in this little closet! And it is a pain to keep them all out while trying to hold Eliza while the nurse shoots her up! :)

HOLY COW!!!! Hopefully that will NEVER happen again. Good luck for the next week and a half! {or so} And for the record, 12 yr old emotional girls can not control them either!

My mood swings look a lot like Eliza's. Can I just sneak in with Joe next time and get a shot? Except I don't think I'll be as brave as Eliza was.

I think I missed it...why does she have to go through this? Poor girlie?
